Angula’s bail application postponed

Final submissions in the formal bail application of one of the accused in relation to the murder and theft of precious diamonds at Namdia last year will be heard on Friday.

This follows the close of the State’s case in the bail hearing of Joel Angula yesterday.

During the session, State witness Simeon Nghilalulwa was still being cross-examined by the accused’s lawyer, Veiko Alexander.

The lawyer contended that as opposed to the witness’s testimony, Angula was present at the time the police were at Namdia and that he was ushering and assisting them.

The inspector had testified that Angula was nowhere to be found for three hours after the commission of the crime at Namdia.

Responding to the lawyer yesterday, he stated that the reason the issue of absenteeism was brought up was because when Angula was required to indicate specific spots for the police to take pictures, he could not be found.

Additionally, he stated that various members of the police looked for him; therefore, the conclusion is that he was not there when he was supposed to be.

Nghilalulwa testified that if Angula is saying that he was there, “then he is lying to the court.” Angula (45) faces the charges of murder, robbery, two counts of attempted murder and possession of rough and uncut diamonds.

In addition, he is charged with theft of diamonds, possession of an unknown quantity of rough or uncut diamonds, and disguising the unlawful origin of property in contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act. During the commencement of his trial, Angula had testified that should he be tried on the charges, he would tender pleas of not guilty to all the charges. He stated he was unaware of how senior protection officer Francis Eiseb (58) died or who killed him.

He testified that he was tied with a cable on both arms and legs, with his head covered with a bag, in a toilet in the Namdia building by suspected robbers during the robbery incident. “I did not plan with anybody, and there is no evidence before this court that I planned with anybody,” stated the accused.

Angula also denied stabbing or planning with anyone to stab the two complainants in the two counts of attempted murder.

He also stated he did not receive parcels from Namdia and that he was only arrested after the police apparently discovered that one of the robber suspects involved in the matter, Max Endjala, was his family member.

The State is represented by Johannes Kalipi.

The matter was postponed to 30 January 2026 for submissions in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court. mukubeiuze@gmail.com
