ONGWEDIVA – Police in Outapi have opened a case of murder after finding the corpse of an infant girl in the Ruacana canal on Monday afternoon.

Police said NamWater staff contacted them after seeing a blue plastic bag containing something suspicious floating by during routine cleaning of the canal.

Upon investigation they found the dead baby girl.

Detective Inspector Cornelius Junias of the Outapi Police said they suspect the baby was dumped on Monday as her remains still looked fresh. Junias said they were trying to bring the perpetrator to book and pleaded with the public to assist in tracking the parents.

“We are particularly urging the public to come forward with information of women who were known to have given birth recently but are not seen with a baby,” he said.

The police suspect the infant is between one and two months old. She was wearing a pink tracksuit when discovered.

Anyone with information that could lead to the baby’s parents may contact Junias on the mobile numbers 0812576768/0813431516.

The docket number for the case is CR12/07/2014.

The baby’s body is being kept at the Okahao mortuary.
