WINDHOEK – The trial of the Deputy Prosecutor-General Jackson Kuutondokwa (55) who stands accused of drinking and driving will commence on November 14 in the Regional Court in Katutura.

Kuutondokwa faces charges of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and negligence and reckless driving. He allegedly caused an accident in Windhoek’s Independence Avenue on April 8 last year.

The matter was remanded to yesterday for plea and trial but was remanded to November 14, and the witnesses were cautioned to be present in court for the trial. The hearing was remanded because the defence indicated they want the services of an advocate. Kuutondokwa is free on a warning that was also extended to November 14, 2013.

In 2004, Kuutondokwa was also investigated after he allegedly rammed his vehicle into an electricity transformer in Wanaheda. The incident took place after Kuutondokwa’s driver’s licence, which had been suspended at the time for three months following a conviction on a charge of drunken driving, was returned to him.

The deputy prosecutor-general also previously pleaded guilty in the High Court to driving while under the influence of alcohol on December 8, 2002. Kuutondokwa was fined N$5 000 or twelve months imprisonment, of which N$2 500 or six months were suspended for three years on condition he is not convicted of a similar offence during the duration of the suspension of his sentence.

Magistrate Sarel Jacobs presided. Cliff Lutibezi represented the State. Christian Nambahu, of Nambahu and Associates is defending Kuutondokwa.
