The Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Emma Kantema, has handed over Early Childhood Development (ECD) Kits to the Chief Xaai ECD Centre at Farm Uitkoms.

The handover is part of the government project in collaboration with partners to procure 1,552 ECD kits worth N$5,500,610.98 for early learning centres across the country. In addition, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, UNICEF, and funding from the European Union assisted with project rollout.

Speaking at the event, Kantema said the ECD kits will help improve learning conditions for children, especially those in rural and marginalised communities. “These kits are more than just boxes of materials; they are treasure chests of opportunity,” she said.

“Each one contains educational toys, art supplies, storytelling tools, and hygiene items that help create safe, fun, and stimulating spaces for children to learn and grow.”

She explained that early childhood is a critical period in a person’s life, a time when the foundation for learning, health, and emotional well-being is built. “Our goal is to ensure that every child, no matter where they come from, has access to quality early education,” she said.

The Chief Xaai ECD Centre was the first to receive its kits for 2025, as part of a national rollout that has already started delivering to all 14 regions of Namibia. The minister appreciated Palms for Life (PFL) for their efforts in supporting community development and for helping construct the modern Chief Xaai ECD Centre, which opened in March 2023.

“Palms for Life has been instrumental in creating a conducive learning space here at Farm Uitkoms. As a ministry, we will continue supporting such initiatives. So far, we have provided instant porridge to support children’s nutrition, and now these kits will strengthen their learning experiences,” she said.

The minister is happy with the development partners for their continued commitment to early childhood development. “Your contributions are helping us build a future where every Namibian child can thrive, said Kantema.”

She noted that educators play a vital role in shaping young minds. “These kits are for you, to support your creativity and care as you guide our youngest citizens. Through your dedication, we are building strong, confident, and capable future leaders,” she concluded.
