Mining licence application for new copper mine
2013-12-16Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK - A mining licence application was expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Mines and Energy this past Friday for the establishment of a new copper mine in the Omaheke Region. The application comes from the Craton Mining company for the establishment of the Omitiomire Copper Mine near Steinhausen. If approved the Craton Mining company, who says they have been exploring in Namibia for the last seven years, plans to establish a N$400 million copper mine that is expected to produce more than 25 000 tones of grade A and B copper plate during the 6.75 expected life of the mine, which is described as phase one of the project. If successful in their application Craton hopes to move on to second phase during which they hope to be able to develop a larger project based on the deeper sulphide copper resource already confirmed at Omitiomire in addition to other copper resources which might be discovered within trucking distance of the first phase. If Craton receives the go ahead from the Ministry the new copper mine could employ more than 130 people on a full time basis while about 200 jobs could be created during the construction phase of the mine.
