SPYL Want Regional Education Offices in Opuwo
2008-06-24Staff Report 2 "By Michael Liswaniso OPUWO The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL)'s Regional Executive Committee for Kunene says it is against a decision by the Kunene Regional Council to relocate regional education offices to Khorixas. It appealed to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Vitalis Ankama, to have the regional education offices relocated back to Opuwo. At a press conference summoned shortly after a peaceful demonstration by residents of Opuwo last week Friday, SPYL Regional Youth Secretary, Ronnie Mutrifa, stated that the Government has made substantial achievements of the 17 years. Residents staged a demonstration against the regional council, which they allege is run corruptly. Reading out the press statement, Mutrifa applauded the Government's move to identify Opuwo as the regional capital saying the move is commendable and is in line with the policy of decentralisation. Mutrifa and his committee pointed out that they want to see Opuwo fully developed with all infrastructure in place to cater for all regional Government's needs. ""We are also aware that this location of the education regional office to be based in Khorixas has a political motive, which we are aware of, Khorixas holds the United Democratic Front (UDF) headquarters,"" stated Mutrifa. ""The education regional director was appointed to be based in Opuwo because all heads of ministries in the Kunene region are based here. The issue of infrastructure is a capital project and the regional council should look into this matter and take it up with the Ministry of Education and systematically provide infrastructure. Why take the education office to Khorixas?"" Mutrifa asked. The regional SPYL office called on regional council to come up with visible plans and solve problems of lack of houses, office building and other projects. He charged that the regional government has failed the youth. Mutrifa thanked those involved in the construction of the Opuwo-Kamanjab Road.
