Stray cow caused accident that claimed six lives
2016-11-09Staff Report 2 Windhoek - The Namibian Police Force (Nampol) has urged animal owners to ensure that their animals are secure and under control at all times to reduce the number of accidents on national roads. Inspector Slogan Matheus of the Nampol public relations division explained that statistics on vehicle accidents caused by animals are not pleasing as stray animals such as cows, donkeys and wild animals are some of the common causes of accidents on Namibian roads. “The law does not spare any animal owner who knowingly fails or neglects to take proper care of his or her animals, as such person will also be implicated in the crime at hand,” said Matheus. He added that owners of stray animals could be charged with culpable homicide if it is found that their animals (involved in car accidents) were neglected at the time of the accident. Matheus was reacting to the car accident that claimed six lives some 30 kilometers south of Windhoek on the national road between Windhoek and Rehoboth. The accident occurred close to Omeya Estate in the early hours of yesterday. The accident took place between 00h00 and 01h00 close to Omeya Estate, said Matheus. “An Iveco bus carrying 24 occupants including the driver struck a cow that was crossing the road and the driver lost control and hit a tree on the side of the road,” added Matheus. It is believed the Iveco bus was travelling from Rundu to Noordoewer. “The deceased are not yet formally identified and police investigations into the matter are underway,” said Matheus.
