TLC searching for its next African presenter
2016-08-01Staff Report 2 Windhoek The popular entertainment TV channel, TLC, is looking for that special person who has the winning style and Colgate smile to land the chance to present TLC’S Most Extreme, a brand new, four-part series coming to TLC Entertainment (DStv 135) in Q1 2017, plus an extra one-off special documenting the winner’s story. Last year Namibia’s very own David Mbeha was announced as TLC’s Next Great Presenter and as TLC’s first African presenter. With over 1 500 TLC fans from across the continent who entered the highly contested competition, and after 60 000 votes, Mbeha was crowned the winner. This time around, the competition is set to be even bigger, with more amazing prizes up for grabs for the lucky winner, including a luxury holiday for two, plus of course the opportunity to travel to London to film the four-part series in one of TLC’s studios. “The show gave me an African audience. The recognition and love that I have received across Africa will forever remain in my heart. The experience on TLC is one that I will forever hold dearly, one that I will for sure tell my grandchildren about one day. I learned so much about the world of television, I saw my dreams come to life and I knew that I was home,” says Mbeha. He adds that TLC came at a time when he was about to give up on himself and everything he ever wanted. “When doors are often shut on you, somehow you slowly start giving up,” he says. Although the most difficult part about being on the show was doubting himself and his potential, the easiest was being able to show Africa his love of style, fashion and his passion for television. “To those that are still having doubts about trying it out this year, give yourself a chance to shine, once you have given your best, surrender. Be bold enough to follow your dreams and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise, believe in yourself and most of all pray,” he says. Lee Hobbs, VP of channels, emerging business, discovery networks at CEEMEA said: “This year, they will we be looking for contenders made to be in front of the camera, with the enthusiasm, charisma, style and smile needed to make our TV screens light up and join the likes of Buddy, Randy and Oprah in the TLC hall of fame. TLC fans from across the continent have until August 21 to submit a 90-second video audition showcasing their presenting skills and explaining why they have what it takes to be the perfect presenter. Candidates will also be required to read a pre-written script to camera, details of which, plus full entry criteria, can be found on the Next Great Presenter website. Each video audition will be reviewed by a team of experts who will select the top twelve to advance to the Boot Camp stage during which three finalists will be selected by a panel of judges including executives from TLC, DStv and Colgate. But, in the end it will be up to the TLC viewers to vote for their favourite finalist, with the winner set to be revealed live at a star-studded event in Johannesburg later this year.
