Entertainment Highly Centralized

Home Time Out Entertainment Highly Centralized

Industry Loop with NSK

Entertainment in Namibia is highly centralised. If you aspire to be a successful poet, you need to be in Windhoek. If you aspire to be a successful dancer, you need to be in Windhoek. If you aspire to be a back-up singer, you need to be in Windhoek. It makes me sick!

A country of 14 regions with well over two million inhabitants ought to have a fantastic dancer in the dusty streets of Tseiblaagte, or a choral composer in the fogy streets of Kuisebmund, or a sculpture in the hypnotising scenery of Nomtsoub! The majority of the most influential media houses are based in Windhoek. The best venues are in Windhoek. EVERYTHING IS IN WINDHOEK! It is high time that we, through collective efforts look towards empowering locals in smaller towns with top notch entertainment. The national awards ceremony took a bold step towards realising my dream by hosting its proceedings at the coast.

It is my desperate plea that event’s organisers and entertainers join hands to initiate events in smaller towns. Towns that are doing it for themselves are Ongwediva with their famed trade fair; Luderitz with its crayfish festival and Swakopmund with its Kermis festival. There are obviously more but for the sake of space we limit it to the three. This however is not good enough.

How awesome would it be economically, socially and spiritually (ok, now I’m pushing it) if 99FM studios were based in Usakos? Or if the New Era news room was based in Berseba?

I have been to every region in Namibia and people generally are much more excited about your presence then the capital city. The talent is in the regions. The real entertainment (no filter) is in the regions. If the NTN had branches all over the country, we would’ve had our own Denzel Washington by now.

The private sector can and will only get involved if you present proposals that are targeting the masses (depending on their target market) and will hardly be excited about a project deemed for the capital.

Let’s take entertainment to the regions!
