WINDHOEK– Close to 85 learners from about 20 schools throughout Namibia took part in the 26th edition of the Goethe-Centre’s annual German Language competition on September 14.

According to organiser, Corinna Burth, learners were tested according to their written skills as well as their ability to communicate in German. They were grouped in eight categories to evaluate them according to their proficiency. She says five learners from different age groups and proficiency level secured themselves one of the desirable flights to Germany, sponsored by Deutsch-Namibische Gesellshchaft (DNG) and the Padagogischer Austauschdient (PAD) and will leave for a multiple week trip next year in May and August. “As this outstanding price was only available for the older learners, the winners aged 7 and 8 were awarded with cash prices and other attractive prices like, exclusive files and stationery, memory sticks, mp3 players and more,” explains Burth

While on a break learners had a chance to enjoy the performance from the blue sky band, and they had different activities to keep them busy during break time. They set up a walls with word puzzles, creating a piece of art, decorating a dove of peace with paper flower and baking waffles and creating a collage with their photo that they take at the event. Namibian filmmaker, Oshosheni Hiveluah, offered a video project where every learner had possibilities to be part of a silent movie clip, says Burth.

Kumbee Tjirimuje, John-Daroll Steenkamp, Agnetha Brockerhoff, Candice Mouton and Saara Amutse are the winners of a trip to German, while Anthony Lee, Carlos Maenda and Kabuba Masuke take the cash prizes. The juries were Professor Marianne Zappen-Thomson, Head of the German Department at the University of Namibia (Unam),Bianka Potrykus from the German Aacdemic Exchange Programme (DAAD), Detlef Pfeiffer and Hella Eichhoff both lecturers from the Goethe Centre and qualified German teachers Ute Scuda from the Namib High School, Gerchia Louw from the Delta High School and Marion Krooss from the Deutsche Hohere Privatschule (DHPS).

“M+Z Motors, WB-We care Trust, Namibia Breweries, Hotel Heinitzbururg, Jewellers Herrle Herma, AGDS and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of German, make sure this event happen,”Purth appreciates.
