Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform minister Inge Zaamwani says the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival (LCF) goes beyond entertainment by contributing significantly to local economic activity, tourism growth, and the development of small and medium enterprises.
She made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at a fundraising gala dinner for the festival held in the town last weekend.
Zaamwani noted that the festival also creates seasonal employment opportunities for residents of Lüderitz and surrounding areas.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Harvesting Sustainability, Empowering Communities,” she said the gathering reaffirmed a shared commitment to the sustainable management of fisheries resources for the benefit and empowerment of all Namibians.
She added that the festival has grown into one of the country’s signature cultural and tourism events.
However, she stressed that its true success should be measured by how much value is generated for Namibia’s blue economy, including job creation, value addition, and equitable benefit-sharing with communities, particularly those living near resource areas.
Zaamwani further noted that Lüderitz is at the centre of major global developments, including green hydrogen initiatives and anticipated final investment decisions on oil and gas projects.
Turning to marine resources, she emphasised that they are not only an economic asset but also a cornerstone of Namibia’s food security.
“For decades, the ocean has fed our people, sustained thousands of jobs, and supported coastal communities,” she said.
The minister commended the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival Trust and the Lüderitz Town Council for their perseverance and dedication.
She also thanked corporate sponsors, saying their support reflects a commitment to inclusive development and responsible partnership.
More than N$700 000 was pledged during the gala dinner, with Standard Bank and MTC each contributing N$150 000 to the trust fund.
