WINDHOEK – Francina Amakali, sports officer in the Oshikoto Region, last Saturday hosted a successful mini basketball tournament in Tsumeb, which attracted more than 86 participants who took part in various categories.

Boys and girls from various schools in Tsumeb participated in the U/9 and U/13 age categories, where they showcased their skills on the basic fundamentals of basketball by doing some dribbling, passing, shooting, crossovers and lay-ups. The event was made possible by Alpha Clinic, which sponsored the medals, trophies and refreshments.
Results were as follows:

Boys Category:
1st – Nomtsoub Primary School; 2nd – Tsumeb English Medium team A; 3rd – Tsumeb English Medium team B.

Girls Category:
1st – St Francis Primary School; 2nd – Nomtsoub Primary School; 3rd – Tsumeb English Primary School.
Annalisa Gereses from St Francis Primary School walked away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament award after scoring 36 points.

“As a sport officer the main focus of this tournament was to strive for a continuous and harmonious growth of basketball. I would like to see the mini basketball programme implemented and supported in as many schools and communities as possible. The reason for my focus is that basketball can be a great educational opportunity for athletes, providing personal and social development of our youth,” said Gereses.
