Team Namibia is set to depart for South Africa this Sunday, ahead of the All-Ages Netball Tournament, scheduled to take place from 7 to 11 July in Cape Town.
The prestigious youth competition, initially slated for Boksburg in Gauteng Province, was recently moved to the Western Cape due to logistical changes.
Namibia will be represented by two age groups, U/17 and U/18, with both teams expected to travel via road over the weekend. Speaking to New Era Sport ahead of departure, head of delegation and Namibia Schools’ Sport Union (NSSU) netball chairperson Eben Ambondo expressed satisfaction with the final squads.
“I’m happy with the selections and the quality of players we’re sending. The teams are well-balanced, we have experienced players who’ve competed at an international level, and we’ve also opened the door for first timers to gain exposure,” said Ambondo.
Meanwhile, NSSU president Rodger Kambatuku echoed similar sentiments, saying the attention now turns to preparation and performance.
“I believe we’ve selected the best possible teams. The focus now should be on final preparations. Although time is limited, I’m confident the players will train consistently within their regions and deliver a strong performance,” he said.
Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission, Freddy Mwiya urged the team to represent the nation with pride. “We hope they bring medals back home once the tournament is done; I believe the team was well selected and hope that they will fly the country’s flag high. I trust the selectors did their job and chose the best players to win us medals,” he said.
