Namibia honours liberation hero Amunyela

Namibia honours liberation hero Amunyela

President Nangolo Mbumba described the late Sacky Amunyela as a patriot whose unwavering commitment to justice, equality and liberty defined his extraordinary journey.

The President made these remarks yesterday when Namibia bid a solemn farewell to Amunyela, a veteran of the country’s liberation struggle.

He was buried in Onayena in the Oshikoto region.

The event, attended by political leaders, dignitaries and nationwide mourners, was marked by heartfelt tributes.

“His sacrifices have paved the way for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. Comrade Amunyela’s name will forever be etched in the annals of Namibia’s history,” said the President in a speech read on his behalf.

Mbumba said Amunyela’s activism began in the 1960s when his political engagement led to his expulsion from the Ongwediva Seminary.

He joined the Swapo Party in 1969, and went into exile in 1972, where he furthered his commitment to the liberation cause.

Under the leadership of seasoned freedom fighters, he received specialised engineering training in the then-Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (now Russia).

He was equipped to play a pivotal role in Namibia’s struggle.

In 1974, Amunyela became a deputy engineer commander.

His technical expertise and leadership were vital in establishing key bases on Namibia’s Eastern Front.

Despite sustaining severe injuries during a military mission that year, he remained steadfast in his resolve to see Namibia free from South African rule.

The President highlighted Amunyela’s role in shaping a united and peaceful Namibia, reflecting on his contributions as a freedom fighter and leader.

“His legacy is a reminder that the sacrifices of our heroes were not in vain,” Mbumba said.

He highlighted the indelible impact of Amunyela’s sacrifices, not only in securing Namibia’s independence but fostering unity and peace in the nation.

“We will forever cherish his contributions, and remember the unwavering dedication he showed for the betterment of Namibia,” the President said.

Born in 1949, Amunyela was a freedom fighter whose journey epitomised selflessness and resilience.
