… win Marcel Desailly Youth Cup

ACCRA – Namibia’s youth football team currently on tour to Accra, Ghana continues to chalk up some impressive results after being crowned champions of the Marcel Desailly Youth Cup in Accra on Sunday.

The travelling entourage, comprising of a combination of Under-17 and Under-20 footballers, are under the guidance of youth coach Turipamue Upi and held Eastland FC to a 2-all stalemate with FNB Orlando Pirates striker Terdius Uiseb and Tura Magic fullback Salom Pam netting a goal apiece for the visitors.

The Namibians went on to record another impredssive win when they defeated Hero Stars by a solitary goal on Saturday. Stars is owned and coached by former Ghanaian international Yaw Preko.

On Sunday, the team competed against the Marcell Desailly Invitational which included professional footballers and those out of contract as well as those on holiday in Ghana, and after a goalless 90 minutes the young Namibians squandered a good opportunity to wrap up the match when Pam missed from the penalty spot. However, the visitors held on and eventually triumphed 5-4 in the extra-time shootout.

The team will return to Windhoek this weekend after what observers describe a hugely successful West African safari. “We have been involved in some high profile games against top local teams and the youngsters have shown great improvement in their game, and are getting better with each game we have played so far. It is a great experience for the team and going forward we hope to see these players graduate into the senior national team soon,” said team manager Kakes Amaning from Accra.

An invitation by the American Lincoln Community School in Accra saw the youngsters attend a coaching clinic  with former FIFA Under-17 player of the Year in 1991 Nii Lamptey and Mohammed Gargo.
