Drug-related arrests topped the weekend crime report issued by the Namibian police on Sunday.
The report recorded several drug-related arrests across various towns of the country.
The weekend crime report, several suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, including parcels of cannabis and mandrax tablets, during search operations conducted by the police. At Spokiesdorp in Lüderitz, a suspect was arrested on Friday around 09h00 after police discovered a bag of cannabis buried in the ground during a search. The suspect is expected to appear in the Lüderitz Magistrate’s Court.
Namibia Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi called on Namibians to join forces with the police to curb drug trade and abuse in the communities.
“The entire nation should join forces with us to fight these evils that are destroying particularly our youth and their future while breaking families and fuelling violence in our societies,” Shikwambi said.
She stressed that the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking has become a threat to the nation as well as communities.
“The Namibian Police Force remains steadfast and at the forefront of the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking,” she said. “We will not be lax but continue to fight these illegal activities, joined by our law-abiding citizens,” she added.
In a separate incident in Lüderitz, two male suspects, aged between 25 and 35, were arrested after they attempted to smuggle cannabis hidden in food into a police station. At Khorixas, a 34-year-old woman was arrested after cannabis was discovered in a parcel inside a vehicle during a police search.
Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Rehoboth’s Block E area early Saturday morning after he was allegedly found in possession of cannabis.
At Kamanjab along the Outjo C40 Road, a 25-year-old suspect was arrested after police allegedly found him in possession of cannabis and mandrax tablets following a search.
In Keetmanshoop, a 26-year-old man was arrested for dealing in drugs after he was allegedly found with mandrax tablets and cannabis, which he attempted to throw over a yard fence.
A 47-year-old man was also arrested at a roadblock between Windhoek and Rehoboth after police allegedly found cannabis in his possession.
She urged Namibians to report any illegal activities promoting drug trade and illicit trafficking.
“The community should not tire of reporting to your nearest police station or police acquaintances,” Shikwambi pleaded.
