NamRA flags tax return duplication glitch in ITAS

The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) has identified a technical glitch in its Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) that has resulted in duplicate tax returns for some taxpayers, prompting the agency to temporarily advise against submitting affected returns.

In a statement issued yesterday, NamRA confirmed that the duplication issue was detected on Monday.

The problem affects a limited number of taxpayers who’s previously submitted returns appear more than once on the system.

NamRA spokesperson Yarukeekuro Ndorokaze said the agency’s technical team is actively working to resolve the matter to prevent further disruptions.

“We have detected an unintended duplication of returns within ITAS, and our technicians are addressing the issue as a matter of urgency. In the meantime, we urge taxpayers not to submit any outstanding duplicated returns until the system is fully stabilised,” he said.

ITAS is Namibia’s central digital platform used for tax registration, return submissions, payments and compliance monitoring. The system was introduced as part of government efforts to modernise tax administration, improve efficiency and enhance voluntary compliance.

Concerns had emerged among taxpayers that the duplication could negatively affect their compliance status or delay the issuance of key documents. However, NamRA has sought to reassure the public that safeguards are in place. “Affected taxpayers will not be disadvantaged. They will still be able to obtain a Tax Good Standing or Tax Clearance Certificate, provided their tax affairs are otherwise compliant,” he said.

Tax clearance certificates are required for a wide range of transactions, including public procurement, business registrations and certain financial applications. Any disruption to their issuance can have significant implications for businesses and individuals.

NamRA said it will provide further updates once the issue is fully resolved and encouraged taxpayers to monitor official channels for guidance.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to restore normal system functionality,” the agency said.
