KATIMA MULILO – President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Tuesday commended the expansion of road infrastructure in the Zambezi region, describing it as a clear demonstration of Namibia’s progress since independence.
Speaking at the Heroes’ Day commemoration at the Katima Mulilo Sports Stadium, she said the construction of tarred roads linking Katima Mulilo to neighbouring countries was an achievement that would have been unimaginable before 1990.
“Development is a process. At independence, it was not easy to reach Katima Mulilo, which was only accessible by gravel roads. Today, from the border of South Africa to Katima Mulilo, one travels on tarred roads,” she said.
The President noted that the Zambezi region is now connected to Zambia, Angola and Botswana by modern road networks.
She acknowledged that not all challenges in the region have been resolved.
Ndandi-Ndaitwah pointed to improvements in education facilities, healthcare, water supply, electricity and retail infrastructure.
She assured that her administration, guided by Swapo Party principles, remains committed to accelerating development through targeted interventions under the Sixth National Development Plan and the 2024 Swapo Party election manifesto.
“As government, we are committed to empowering the youth, advancing industrialisation, promoting the beneficiation of natural resources, creating employment opportunities and intensifying the fight against corruption,” she said.
She added that these commitments are the most fitting tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for Namibia’s independence, which the nation honoured on Heroes Day.
The commemoration in Katima Mulilo featured speeches, poetry, cultural performances and marches by the Namibian Defence Force.
