Poor preparation blamed for Omaheke netball final loss

Poor preparation blamed for Omaheke netball final loss

Zebaldt Ngaruka

GOBABIS – Omaheke assistant coach Gregg Makari believes the regional team’s underwhelming preparations contributed to their 40-21 defeat by Kavango East in the Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup netball final.

Makari says the team only had a week to prepare, which was not enough for a competition of such magnitude. “One week isn’t enough to assemble and fine-tune a competitive squad. Despite that, the girls showed class by reaching the final – an achievement we are proud of,” he said.

He noted that netball often comes down to fine margins, especially when converting chances. “At this level, you must be clinical. We failed to convert all our chances, and Kavango East took theirs well. Credit to them – they were the better team throughout,” he added.

Makari also expressed gratitude to the Omaheke Regional Council, supporters, friends and players’ families. “Their support was immense and made a big difference. That’s the kind of encouragement we need, going forward,” he said.

Captain Vepukisa Kavari, who played her final match due to age eligibility, echoed the coach’s sentiments. “Preparations were not ideal, but I am proud of our efforts. The final didn’t go our way, but we take this as a learning experience,” she said.

Kavari praised her teammates’ dedication, and said they would bounce back stronger. “We’ve reached new heights, and I believe the next generation will carry the baton further,” she said.
