WALVIS BAY – The United Democratic Front has sights fixed on improved performance at the national polls and will not replace their National Assembly representatives.
The party is represented in the house by veteran politicians Apius Auchab and Dudu Murorua, who until this year, served as party president and deputy president respectively.
This decision was taken during the party’s first central committee (CC) meeting following the election of the new leadership, that took place in Okahandja recently.
UDF president, Kunene regional council chairperson Hendrik Gaobaeb said the crucial CC meeting allowed the party to consider its financial position as it prepares for the upcoming election campaign.
“Our constitution makes provision for a five-year term; therefore, I proposed to the central committee, through a recommendation by the executive committee, to allow Auchab and Murorua to finish their five-year terms,” Gaobaeb said.
Their focus, he said, should rather be on improving the groundwork campaigns and ensuring that he improves the administrative functions of the party. Gaobaeb furthermore wants to create an environment which yields unity within the party ranks.
As such, there is no need to recall the current MPs as he has plans to create a retired politicians forum for the party, he explained.
“We are grateful that we had a smooth transition. We are all shifting our focus to mobilisation activities on the ground to improve our numbers. Improving numbers is the only item on our agenda right now,” the seasoned politician said.
However, the performance of the MPs will be monitored, and they will be required to submit detailed reports of their activities and achievements to the CC through the president’s report.
Party spokesperson Mabasen /Narib, added that the CC also resolved to implement a checks and balance system to hold the elected office bearers accountable.
According to him, local authority and constituency councillors will be required to report on a quarterly basis to the central committee, while party financial reports will be given to branches on a quarterly basis.
“It will no longer be a secret as we want transparency in the party’s operations and finances,” Narib said.
