Balancing firefighting and entrepreneurship

Jaenique Swartz

At just 22 years, Damien Mbanga is not only an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) officer, but also the owner of Integrated Automotive Namibia, an automotive service business.

Balancing his passion for firefighting with entrepreneurship, he has become a notable figure known for his innovative ideas and commitment to success.

Specialising in the emergency response, mitigation, evacuation and rescue of aircraft passengers and crew involved in aviation accidents, Mbanga’s journey into firefighting was not initially a passion. However, first-hand experience revealed to him the physical challenges and rewards of being at the frontline of ensuring aviation safety and security.

When not fulfilling his duties as an ARFF officer, he channels his energy into his automotive service business. This venture was born out of his deep love and appreciation for cars, cultivated since childhood by being surrounded by unique and rare family-owned cars.
“The main inspiration behind starting my business is my passion for cars, both performance and styling of automobiles. It spans from years back when I was still a little boy, and being surrounded by unique and rare cars owned by my family, it stuck with me as the years went by,” said Mbanga.

The services offered by Integrated Automotive Namibia range from diagnostic tests and fault-clearing to indicator modifications, rear spoilers, diffusers, headlights and taillight sets.

Living a balanced life is crucial for Mbanga, who emphasises spending time with family, staying active and researching his key interests to stay grounded amidst the daily hustle.

”To provide customer satisfaction, one must always be prepared to go the extra mile.

What sets me apart from competitors is my pricing and my customer relations. My pricing is very budget-friendly, compared to competitors. I have surveys where I engage with my clients to see what goods and services they will like to be offered more of,” he said.

Integrated Automotive provides customers with the option to buy items over three months, enhancing affordability. Regular giveaway campaigns on their Instagram platform further promotes accessibility, allowing the public to receive free vehicle accessories when subscribing to their business page.

“The biggest success of my business was working with big company groups like Mitsibushi Namibia to advertise my products by fitting test units to their vehicles for promotional purposes and gaining the experience of commercial trade,” added Mbanga.

“Opportunities are endless, and for you to find them, you should get up and look for them. Be creative, be inspired, but refrain from duplicating,” the young entrepreneur urged.

He underscored the importance of starting a business not just to make money, but to bring about positive change. Building a strong customer base and networking are thus crucial aspects for young entrepreneurs.
