Basson unveils New Beginnings

Jaenique Swartz

In the vibrant world of contemporary art, every exhibition serves as a window into the soul of its creator, offering glimpses of their innermost thoughts, emotions and aspirations.

Pieter Basson is no exception, having been in the creative industry for more than 20 years. His captivating art has taken him all over the world, recalling moments from his youth where he had red hair tied with a wild spirit, not knowing art would become his lifelong passion. “This new exhibition is rebirth, New Beginnings to me means a new day dawns. The Bluebell is prevalent in my work because it resembles the first flower that blooms post-winter,” Basson noted.

He admits that he did not simply put his paintbrush and colouring pens and crayons down during his five-year sabittical, sharing that he took the time to create when it felt fitting, as creating his art pieces is not something he could simply turn his back on. His latest artwork was created last year during a period where he had ample time and energy to fill his blank canvases.

Basson shares that Christianity is something which continues to inspire his work, even though he admits most people might not like it. “Creation is creating, and creating something is celebrating that. I create things the way I like it, the way it speaks to me,” he enthused.

The artist pondered on the question posed on whether New Beginnings would be his last exhibition, but gleefully answered that there is hope in the unknown. He will continue to do what feels genuine and natural to his being, where he delights himself in encouraging artists to never stop creating. “If there is something you wish to put out into the world, do it. Create what speaks to your soul.”

The creation of this newest artwork turned out to be quite the family affair, as his younger nephew, Theo de Kock and good friend Jan-Willem Bonthuys, aided in creating some of their own artwork under the mentorship of Basson.

The exhibition is set to take place early April, where newly-appointed minister Information and Communication Technology, (MICT) Emma Theofelus has confirmed her attendance as guest of honour, where she will deliver the opening speech.

Basson highlights his gratitude to all the confirmed sponsors, such as Kleine Kuppe Printers, who designed the invitations and postcards, and a reputable liquor store and grocery shop which will provide refreshments to the guests.
