Braai package earns Danie BizzKids award
"Windhoek Fifteen-year-old Danie van der Merwe from the Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (WAP) is the winner of the 2015 Bank Windhoek BizzKids award. Van der Merwe traded as ‘Nou Gaan Ons Braai’ and sold his handmade braai pack consisting of 2kg charcoal, a packet of matches and one packet of Danie’s favourite mixed spices. He walked away with N$5 000 and another N$5 000 for his school. He says it was a lot of work getting the braai pack together. “My hard work paid off. I used to work on my braai pack every day afterschool to make sure it’s perfect and ready on time for the competition. I’m grateful for Bank Windhoek for giving us young BizzKids exposure to the marketing world. The competition was good, well planned and it was really a lot of fun,” van der Merwe says. He encourages other entrants, who didn’t win, to never give up. “They should not give up on their ideas, they really had great ideas and they should keep on trying. Hard work pays off,” he concluded. The runner-up award, with prize money of N$3 000, went to the team of ‘Fourth Harmony’, Elizabeth Itumba (14), Adelheid Slinger (13), Tatiana Cecilio (13) and Vivalda Cecilio (14) from Augeikhas Primary School, Windhoek. These BizzKids made delicious cupcakes, corn dogs, toffee apples and fudge. Their stall was quite popular, as they also had their own mascot, Winnie the Pooh, who entertained the customers and who you could take photos with. The third place with a prize money of N$2 000 went to the team of ‘The Beach Mocho-Tini’s’, Adri van der Merwe (13), Karin Schutz (14), Mariet Bruwer (13) and Mayvonne Swart (13) from Pro-Ed Academy in Swakopmund. These four entrepreneurs sold colourful ‘mocktails’, delicious refreshments with bright colours and exciting ornaments in the glass. Their stall was also very attractive, giving their customers a summer beach feeling. The Bank Windhoek BizzKids competition aims to promote entrepreneurship among the youth, and judging by the business ideas and passions displayed by the finalists, Namibia have many future entrepreneurs in the making.
