Businessman in court for alleged rape
By Nuusita Ashipala OSHAKATI - A businessman from the north, Sindano Hango, who is accused of raping his cousin and offering a N$10 000 bribe to silence her, appeared in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The matter was remanded to February 16. The alleged rape occurred on October 10, 2014, at Uuvudhiya village in Oshana region when Hango allegedly had sexual intercourse with his cousin against her will and thereafter offered her N$10 000 to silence her. It was also alleged that Hango used a corrupt police officer to convince the cousin to accept the money. In previous media reports, it was indicated that given Hango’s status in society – a businessman and constituency councillor’s son - the police were reluctant to arrest the suspect even after a case was opened against him on October 10. The victim also accused Hango’s family of trying to bribe her with money while a police officer at Oshakati apparently also tried to talk her into withdrawing the charges, an advice she strongly refused. Hango appeared before Magistrate Mutafela Likando, while Petrina Hango represented the state.
