2016-03-09Staff Report 2 Windhoek The much-anticipated Otjomuise Secondary School that is funded by the People’s Republic of China will officially open its doors for the first time today. The school, which is situated in Windhoek’s 7de Laan residential area in Otjomuise, could not be finished in time for the start of the academic year. The N$120 million school project benefits from one of the largest Chinese donations to Namibia’s education sector yet. In an interview with New Era yesterday, the Director of Education in the Khomas Region, Gerard Vries, confirmed that the school will be officially opened today. He said the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has agreed that the learners who are currently enrolled at the Jan Möhr project school will be relocated there once it opens. The modern school has a capacity of 800 pupils. Vice-President Dr Nicky Iymabo is expected to officially inaugurate it. The Otjomuise project school is planned as a state-of-the-art school for pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The school, which was supposed to open its doors at the beginning of this academic year, had parents in the surrounding area flocking to enquire about its opening while it was still under construction. Residents whose children will benefit from the school now and in the future are grateful that the school was completed in such a short time. The school will be equipped with classrooms, sport facilities, a multi-purpose hall, a caretaker’s home, a three-storey hostel for boys and girls and teacher housing. It will also have laboratories, specialised classrooms for music, biology and physics, as well as an athletics track and a pavilion.
