City Police Traffic Tips: Roadworthy vehicles enhance road safety

Owning a vehicle comes with the privilege and responsibility of operating it safely on public roads.

Driving a vehicle is a daily necessity, whether it is commuting to work, running errands, or embarking on a road trip. However, with this convenience comes the responsibility of ensuring that
our vehicles are safe and
roadworthy.

Traffic officers now and then come across un-roadworthy vehicles and in most cases, drivers are aware of the defects but simply chose to ignore them. This type of behaviour not only poses a risk to themselves but also to other road users. Vehicle inspection is crucial in ensuring that vehicles are fit to be on the road and its importance cannot be overstated.

The primary reason for vehicle inspection is to ensure road safety. A well-maintained and regularly inspected vehicle reduces the risk of accidents caused by mechanical failures or issues that can be prevented if detected
earlier.

Defective brakes, worn-out tires, faulty lights, and other issues can lead to dangerous situations on the road, thus putting not only the driver but also passengers and other road users at risk. Regular vehicle inspections help identify these problems before they escalate into potentially life-threatening incidents.

To ensure that vehicles on the public road are roadworthy, a traffic officer can stop and inspect any vehicle at any given time. If an officer is of the opinion that a vehicle is not roadworthy upon inspection, such vehicle is suspended from the road and advises the driver to rectify all defects. According to the Road Traffic and Transportation Act, driving a motor vehicle that is not in a roadworthy condition can result in a fine of N$2 000.

Knowing that your vehicle is in good working condition upon inspection provides peace of mind while driving. This also allows drivers to focus on the road and their surroundings, reducing stress and enhancing the overall driving experience.

Vehicle inspection is not just a legal requirement or a routine chore; it is a critical aspect of responsible vehicle ownership. Regular inspections ensure road safety and prevent accidents. More importantly, it provides drivers and passengers with the peace of mind that comes from knowing they are driving a safe and roadworthy vehicle. So, let us embrace vehicle inspection as an essential step towards safer roads and a more secure driving experience for everyone.
