Cop drowns in Kunene River

A police officer stationed at Outapi drowned over the weekend in the Kunene River. The incident happened at the Otjipahuriro public entertainment area in the Ruacana constituency. Police commander in Omusati region Titus Shikongo said Erasmus Ipuleni Aihuku (27) was socialising with friends before he reportedly went into the river to swim and drowned.

Shikongo said the police in Omusati joined colleagues from Kunene to locate the body. “The teams are also joined by the local people from both Namibia and Angola to search for the body. However, efforts did not yet yield positive results,” said Shikongo.

He said the search is still ongoing. The deceased hailed from Ontanda B in Okaonde village in the Tsandi constituency. Police in Omusati have warned the public to desist from placing stones on the road, after stones were lined up at Omwandi wolukula village on the Outapi- Okalongo main road. Shikongo said the police are hard at work to identify the culprits and to ensure they are subjected to due processes of the law.

“The police is seriously warning those involved to cease the act,” said Shikongo. He stressed that the act is dangerous and can result in loss of lives. Meanwhile, the commander said the matter will be addressed through community meetings and efforts will be made to intensify police patrols in the area. He cautions road users to be on alert for stones when using the said road.
