Cyclists Adrian and Vorster off to Casablanca
Windhoek Final preparations are going full speed for Namibia’s two top female cyclists, Vera Adrian and Michelle Vorster, ahead of their participation in the Continental African Championship (CAC) in Casablanca, Morocco. The Namibian Cycling Federation (NCF) has confirmed that by participating in the CAC, there is still a slim chance for Namibia to obtain the one remaining spot for a female cyclist at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil later this year. The trip to Morocco, at a cost of N$100 000, has been made possible by the generous assistance of local corporate companies and others – as no funding was received through the normal sports channels. It is therefore with great appreciation that the NCF acknowledges the confidence and support of various local companies that made the trip possible. The sponsors are Imperial Managed Logistics, Snyman Transport, Pupkewitz Megabuild and Megatech, the Rock & Rut mountain bike club and Nedbank. The team left for Morocco on Sunday, with the two cyclists accompanied by coach Hans du Toit and team manager Rolf Adrian. The events in Morocco are scheduled as follows: the individual time trial for elite women over 31km starts today at 12h00 (Namibian time), and two days later, the elite ladies road race event over 120km gets underway at 11h30 (Namibian time). NCF has expressed confidence that both Adrian and Vorster are well prepared and have the ability to hoist the Namibian flag. “Our two top female riders, Michelle Vorster and Vera Adrian, have consistently performed well and managed to bring back medals from the last three consecutive continental championships,” reads the statement. During the All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo in September last year the ladies showed great potential and recorded good results, with just seconds missing for a podium position.
