Dr Hage Geingob Cup launched...Orlando Pirates coming to Namibia
2016-05-19Staff Report 2 Windhoek South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns will this year again be back to defend their title when the eagerly-awaited 3rd edition of the annual Dr Hage Geingob Cup gets underway in Windhoek on August 6-7. The competition, whose last two editions were won by South African giants Sundowns, was officially launched in the capital yesterday and was graced by the warm presence of President Hage Geingob, who is the patron of the Namibia Football Association (NFA). The highly-celebrated competition honours Geingob’s tireless contribution to the upliftment and development of local sport, particularly football, while uniting Namibians from all walks of life through football is another objective of the Cup. As is customary, it was announced at yesterday’s launch that this year’s edition will also feature four teams, which are the Cup’s incumbent champions Sundowns and another South African giant Orlando Pirates, Namibia Premiership champions Tigers and a fourth team that will be determined by a SMS competition. Local football fans can vote for their respective clubs to be the fourth team to partake in the Dr Hage Geingob Cup through the SMS competition, which will require fans to SMS the name of their club to the number 5003. All 16 Namibia premier league clubs will be eligible for vetting through the SMS competition. In the opening match of the Cup, Namibia league champions Tigers will take on a fellow local opponent to be determined via the SMS competition, while defending champions Sundowns will confront their compatriots Orlando Pirates – both these matches to be played on August 6. On the Sunday of August 7, the two losing teams will play a curtain raiser while the two winning sides meet in the final. 2016-05-19Staff Report 2
