ECN officials in court for theft
Windhoek Two Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) officials, who allegedly hid an envelope containing ECN forms at Ondangwa on Saturday, appeared in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court this week. The two are Paulus Endjala Shuuveni, 34, and Mateus Ndikwetele Nandago, 39. They face a charge of negligence in their duties. They were released on bail of N$500 each and the matter was remanded to February 15 next year for further investigation. As part of their bail conditions they have to report to the Oshakati police station between 08h00 and 13h00 every Monday. They were also instructed not to interfere with the investigation. Police sources said the two were arrested in Ondangwa between 01h00 and 02h00 on Saturday after allegedly stealing the envelope in question from the polling station where they were employed to administer the 2015 regional council and local authority elections held on Friday. After allegedly stealing the envelope from the polling station at Ondangwa Town Council’s office building, the two reportedly hid it under a bridge not far from the polling station. A security guard at the same office building apparently spotted the two as they hid the envelope and reported the matter to the police, well-placed sources told New Era. The two were promptly apprehended by the police when they returned to the polling station.
