Embracing inclusivity, supporting persons with disabilities

Otjimbingwe-born Michelle Madawas Mushimba (28) extended a hand of gratitude to the people of her town by observing World Disability Day by sharing the day with people with disabilities and gifting them with items.

Mushimba said the celebration marked a significant milestone in the history of Otjimbingwe, as it was the first-ever day dedicated to honouring and celebrating persons with disabilities.

“The event aimed to raise awareness about critical issues related to the inclusion of persons with disabilities and promote the benefits of an inclusive and accessible society for all,” she told Youth Corner.

The pharmacist, based in Windhoek, said by organising this celebration, she not only raised awareness about disability issues but also fostered a sense of unity and support within the community. The event served as a platform for promoting understanding, empathy, and collaboration in addressing the needs of persons living with disabilities in Otjimbingwe.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The philanthropist who is also a fashion designer made sure that the community got some garments to take home and wear them at special occasions including assorted footwear. The group had cake, sweets, and other goodies to indulge in. More than 40 persons with disabilities formed part of the joyous occasion.

“I am planning to do this next year and many more years to come, just hoping that next year we will get more sponsors,” said the ecstatic Mushimba.
