Erongo vaccinates nearly 40 000

Once an epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak in Namibia, the Erongo region has now vaccinated 39 493 people against the pandemic, health authorities confirmed last week.

However, they believe the relaxed Covid-19 protocols are responsible for the current surge of new infections reported in the region and countrywide.

“We think it is the relaxation in Covid-19 protocols amongst the community, including not correctly and consistently wearing masks, social distancing and hand hygiene or sanitising,” Erongo health director Anna Jonas said.

Currently, the Erongo region has only vaccinated the above figure out of its 161 966 target, which is a 24% coverage from the ages 12 and above.

“As much as one is vaccinated, we still need to continue adhering to Covid-19 preventative measures.  Similarly, for those who are eligible for the third dose (booster dose), they should approach our vaccination points for this purpose.  Encourage your friends and family members to follow suit, as well as demystify the myth about Covid-19 vaccines,” urged Jonas.

The health ministry said the demand for vaccinations has gone down, compared to the initial phase when the vaccination campaign started.

“We have seen a small number of children (12-17 years) taking up the Covid-19 vaccine.  We are, therefore, calling upon parents to do the noble thing of getting their children vaccinated.  This is essential, especially now that we are in the fifth wave of Covid-19, and schools are some of the venues where we experience a high Covid-19 transmissions,” she added.
