Flamingoes, United and Rundu Chiefs relegated … BA clinches runner-up spot
2016-04-25Staff Report 2 Windhoek They might be on opposite ends on the country’s flagship league log table, but MTC Premiership runaway log leaders Tigers and basement occupants Flamingoes ended their season in almost identical style. While Ingwe rewrote the history books by clinching the coveted MTC Premiership title with 270 minutes of play remaining, Flamingoes returned the compliment, suffering relegation with a match to spare. The Rehobothers will now make a quick retreat to familiar territory after being humbled 1-0 in front of their home crowd by visiting Eleven Arrows, as the curtain came down on their 2015/2016 MTC Premiership campaign last weekend. Going into last weekend’s action as the new Namibian champions, one would have expected Tigers to slightly take their foot off the gas, but Brian Isaacs’ charges were their usual form, dispatching Mighty Gunners 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. Katutura glamour football club African Stars continued their recent upsurge and much-improved form as the Reds came unstuck, walloping Citizens by four unanswered goals. Ronnie Kanalelo’s inconsistent Unam team had the better of the exchanges in their penultimate clash against runner-up spot chasing FNB Orlando Pirates - waltzing easily past the out of sorts Buccaneers 2-0. Relegation-threatened Rundu Chiefs and Julinho Sporting cancelled each other out in a dull 1-all stalemate, while northern giants Young Chiefs eased their relegation worries, albeit temporarily, with a comprehensive 3-1 win over United Stars. Woody Jacob’s Black Africa all but secured a consolation runner-up place via a 3-0 triumph over LHU Blue Waters, while Paulus ‘Wire’ Shipanga’s much-improved Tura Magic beat Civics by a solitary goal to complete Saturday’s line up. In yesterday’s action, Black Africa secured the runner-up spot by dispatching hapless kid brother Eleven Arrows 4-0 in a one-sided match. Tura Magic beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 and needing victory to escape the drop, Citizens beat Orlando Pirates 3-2, while Civics came out tops in their encounter with Unam – seeing off the students 2-1 in a match of convenience. Young Chiefs were held to a 3-all draw by visiting Julinho Sporting to escape relegation. United Stars condemned neigbours Rundu Chiefs to the national first division (2-1), but the result did little to help their cause, as both Rundu teams were relegated to the country’s second tier division next season. Coastal giants Blue Waters walloped the already relegated Flamingoes 6-0, while African Stars and Mighty Gunners shared the spoils in a two-goal thriller. 2016-04-25Staff Report 2
