Geingob to participate in UNGA 78

President Hage Geingob left for New York yesterday to participate in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, slated for 17-24 September.

The UNGA is the main policy making organ of the UN.

The Presidency announced yesterday that Geingob might make a stop-over in France.

“In his capacity as Patron of Namibian Rugby, President Geingob may drop in to watch the Welwitschias, the Namibian men’s national rugby teams World Cup match against the All Blacks/New
Zealand on Friday, 15 September 2023,” reads the announcement.

In New York, USA, Geingob is expected to deliver his statement on 20 September, which marks a crucial milestone in the journey towards achieving the 2030 Agenda and the urgent need to put the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track.

The theme for this year’s UNGA is ‘Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the
2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all’. President Geingob will speak at the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions on the invitation of the director general of the International Labour Organisation on Sunday.

On 18 September, Geingob will participate in a high-level political forum on sustainable development, where he will deliver a statement on the topic, ‘Scaling up actions on key transitions to accelerate SDG progress’.

The following day, Geingob will participate in the corporate council on Africa roundtable on ‘Critical Minerals and the Energy Transitions’.

“The platform provides an opportunity for Namibia to showcase its position as one of the leading destinations for mining investments and green
solutions, which Namibia advances through the development of a green hydrogen industry.

At the invitation of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, President Geingob will also participate in the UN Climate Ambition Summit, seeking to accelerate action in the fight against climate change.”

In addition to participation in the leaders’ reception to be hosted by president Joe Biden of the United States, Namibia, as a water-stressed country, will be led by President Geingob during the High-Level Panel on Water Investment for Africa on 19 September 2023.

“A strong proponent of the fight against climate change, President Geingob is one of the founders in 2018 of The High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Oceans Panel), which is a unique global initiative by world leaders to build momentum towards a sustainable ocean economy as part of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the Presidency said.

Alongside president Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, Geingob will lead a fireside conversation at the 39th Annual Awards Gala and 70th Africa-America Institute Anniversary celebrations.

He is expected home on 25 September 2023.
