German knowledge an advantage in Namibia

The German language is spoken internationally by about 120 million people, and the knowledge of it can provide a decisive advantage in a country like Namibia.

This was said by commissioner for education cooperation at the Goethe-Institute Corinna Burth during the annual German language competition awards on 9 April 2022.

The competition, which was initiated in 1987, is mostly directed at young people, who chose German as a subject, with the aim to promote the acquisition and maintenance of the language.

The 22 participants in the national competition came from all over the country.

German ambassador to Namibia Herbert Beck, who presented the prizes, said: “It is a challenge and always brave to take part in a competition, but you can see from the success of this language competition that not only those who have won a great prize, but all those who took part will benefit from this experience and be motivated to continue learning the German language”.

The winners are Paula Swart (Edugate Academy), Kayla Diergaardt (Rocky Crest High School), Neyobi le Hané (Berg Op Academy), Amani Mwakambeu (Technical High School), and Levine Gauases (Otjiwarongo Secondary).

Each of the winners walked away with a laptop and language course.
