Golf trials end successfuly

THE Namibia Amateur Golf Association held its golf event at the weekend with a good number of players taking part.

The tournament aimed to qualify participants for various international and local tournaments. Women competed in their category at the Omeya Golf Course, while men played at the Windhoek County Club.

Women who were preparing for the upcoming All Africa Games Golf tournament in Morocco later this year used Saturday’s event as a qualifier and as a gauge for their skills. The men were also preparing for the Region Five Golf tournament scheduled for Zambia in May this year, as well as the National Golf Tournament to be held in Windhoek later this year.

Brenda Len, one of the tournament’s organizers, said they had a successful tournament which was well supported by individuals and corporates who came on board to support a good cause.

“We have a congested calendar for the year, with so many international and local competitions lined up. I think today’s event is important for our various athletes wishing to book their spots at various local and international competitions. They use this tournament to be rated, and the more points you score, the better your chances of qualifying. We are happy with all the corporates who also came on board to support this event, and we are happy that we successfully staged this event,” she said.

The President of Namibia Amateur Golf Union (NAGU), Toady Gurirab, expressed satisfaction with the turnout, adding that he is excited that they would be able to select a good team to represent Namibia at various competitions.

“I am happy with the number of people who showed up at our event, especially the participants. We have players from Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and other parts of the country.

I am delighted to be here witnessing top golf on display; we have our top golfers, and I am happy that we are going to select the best possible teams for the Region Five tournament in Zambia,” he said.
