Golf trials on this weekend

Amateur golfers hoping to get a rating and qualify for the Region Five Games will be accorded a chance to test themselves this weekend.

The president of the Namibia Amateur Golf Union (NAGU), Toady Gurirab, said the federation will hold a qualifying event for the Region Five Games in Zambia, Lusaka, this Saturday at Omeya Golf Course in the southern parts of Windhoek as well as the Windhoek Country Club golf course.

Omeya will host female qualifying events, while males will battle it out at Windhoek Country Club. Speaking to this publication, the president said they expect more than 100 golfers from various parts of Namibia. He added that the tournament will be an open event, and everyone is allowed to register.

“We expect over 100 players as this is one of the national events; it counts for merits on the ranking, so everyone is eager to go on top of the ranking or better their points. After this competition, the national team will be announced, so we’re looking forward to seeing who will make the team,” he said.

Gurirab said preparations are at an advanced stage, and the registration process is still ongoing. He urged aspiring golfers to make use of this opportunity by registering for the competition and testing themselves against other golfers.

“These events are important for up-and-coming golfers because this is where they test their skills, and for me, having many of our young boys and females compete makes the tournament even more exciting because they are the future. We have always had this thing of seeing a golf star from Namibia, and it starts here, taking part in national events and climbing ranks to represent the country at the international level.

I urge females and males to enter,” he said. Registration is N$800 per person.
