Governor visits grieving Stinkwater family

David Adetona

Khomas governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the family of Getrude Rooi and daughter Goldie Landsberg (30), who were recently killed in a shooting at Stinkwater near Dordabis.

The accused, 57-year-old Edward Rooi, fatally shot his wife, also 57 years old, and daughter at their residence last Saturday. It was also claimed that Edward tried to kill Willem Cloete (age unknown) by shooting him four times, and Silvia Kotze (32), who was shot once in the thigh. He also faces a charge of malicious damage to property.

Edward and Getrude Rooi were separated at the time of the incident.

“It bothers me and makes me more concerned to come and greet the family and learn more about what happened. The couple has been separated for two years because of an abusive relationship that has occurred several times. The perpetrator had a pistol, was under the influence of alcohol from a party and killed the people.

“I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time on behalf of myself and the office, as well as the Khomas Regional Council and residents of the region.

The two deceased will be buried at Stinkwater on 18 or 19 November 2022. “We wish the family all the strength; do not believe that you are alone in this mourning time. I will be attending the burial in Stinkwater,” said the governor.

Edward made his first appearance in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court earlier this week. The court postponed the matter to 27 January 2023 for him to apply for legal aid and further police investigations.

He was not granted bail.
