Granny, 95, narrates rape and killings by grandson

WINDHOEK - A 95-year-old pensioner who last month was allegedly raped and assaulted by a grandson  - who then proceeded to kill his two cousins - at Okafitu ka KaTanyange village in the Omusati Region, yesterday narrated the horrifying events.

The granny, whose name cannot be revealed because she is an alleged rape victim, related to New Era how the 27-year-old grandson she brought up beat and threatened to kill her if she did not meet his outrageous demands. The nonagenarian said for nearly 10 years she did not see her grandson who was in jail for murdering his girlfriend in the area of Onesi in Omusati Region.

The day he showed up at home for the first time in a decade, he unleashed terror on everyone that crossed his sight.
It is said that he first showed up while the granny was helping her neighbours with field work. It was her younger grandchildren who informed her that the suspect had come around looking for her.

“That day I went to my neighbour’s house to assist with sowing mahangu because they ploughed with a tractor and therefore needed help with sowing,” she told New Era.

“When I returned home, my two grandsons, whom he later killed, told me he (suspect) has been looking for me. I was shocked and went to sleep,” she said.

In the dead of the night while she was fast asleep, she got a rude awakening when she heard strange movements and saw a shadow in the room. This is because the intruder, her grandson, had lit a torch.
“I recognised him and asked why he is in my room so late. He then told me to keep quiet if I did not want to die. I did not keep quiet and he hit me with a knobkierie on my head,” she said.

“I then screamed, and he beat me again. Then before I fell unconscious, I felt him inserting that stick (knobkierie) between my legs. From there I can no longer remember what transpired further,” she explained.
She can only recall waking up in a pool of blood in the morning when she regained consciousness.
After crawling outside, she was greeted to gruesome scenes of her two grandsons lying dead in a pool of blood.
“I was more shocked. I was so traumatised. I then crawled further until I saw the school-going children whom I sent to go alert the neighbour of what happened.”

“That is when the police were alerted and I was taken to the hospital.”
She further narrated how, astonishingly, the suspect followed her to the hospital and told the nurses that he brought money for his grandmother whom he heard was brutally beaten up by robbers.

The neighbour, Agnes Kadhilamo, then accepted the N$30 he brought, not knowing that he is the suspect in the matter.
According to the victim, the suspect cried uncontrollably at the hospital. He later left.
It was later discovered that the N$30 he brought to hospital was part of N$430 he robbed from his granny the previous night.

The grandmother told New Era that until the time of killing his girlfriend ten years ago, the suspect was a “sweet and disciplined” grandson.

New Era gathered that the suspect was released from jail on parole on 7 February, and a week later on 14 February, committed the heinous crimes.

“All I want now is for him to be sentenced to life imprisonment because he does not fit to be among people,” she pleaded.
The pensioner is now being taken care of by her neighbour Kadhilamo, as she no longer has anyone to stay with after the killing of her grandsons.
