Gunners Move Away from Trapdoor
By Carlos Kambaekwa WINDHOEK There has been minimal changes on the MTC Namibia Premiership log standings after completion of round fourteen last weekend. African Stars were the only team amongst the title contenders who collected maximum points after the Reds saw off log leaders Ramblers with a convincing 3-1 victory, a result that pushed them into 5th place - one place above defending champions Civics on a better goal average. At the foot of the table, Dawid Snewe can now surely get in a couple of peaceful snoozes after his Mighty Gunners proved too strong for Eleven Arrows in a must win encounter at the Mokati Stadium in Otjiwarongo, last Saturday. A well-struck injury time free kick via the boot of centre back Werner Uaputauka, gave the men in uniform the much needed maximum points at stake against a dejected Arrows outfit in a closely contested match - that all but killed off the coastal side's fading title hopes. The result lifted the league rookies four points above the relegation zone and a mere point within striking range of 9th placed Oshakati City, who claimed the scalps of defending champions Civics with a hard fought 2-1 win at Oshakati's Independence stadium. City's Zimbabwean import and inspirational captain Samson Kawawa was the toast of the hosts when the lanky defender converted a penalty on either side of play, sandwiched by Victor Helu's first half strike, to move the Northerners 5 points clear of the danger zone. Elsewhere, basement residents Fedics United and APS Blue Waters got stuck in the mud after both teams were held to stalemates in their respective matches against Orlando Pirates and Black Africa respectively. The Southerners played to a 2-all draw against Orlando Pirates at the J Stephanus Stadium in Keetmanshoop, while the coastal giants' match against Black Africa ended goalless at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay.
