Hangana Seafood shows the way

Hangana Seafood (Pty) Ltd is a 100% Namibian-owned hake business that catches, processes, markets and sells its hake products into worldwide markets.

They recently constructed a state-of-the-art N$300 million wet fish processing plant which became operational in November 2021, supporting the company’s diversification and trading strategy as well as the group’s purpose of “Creating a future, enhancing life”.

The company is focused on becoming a market leader and an employer of choice, as well as remaining a sustainable company supplying value-added ready-made meals to both Namibia and international markets.

Extracting the most value out of the quota that has been allocated to them by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources falls in line with the company’s 2025 Vision to sustainably deliver healthy aquatic offerings to global markets through continuous innovation.

Hangana owns a fleet consisting of six wet-fish trawlers with a catching capacity of 16 500mt of H&G annually (21 000 quota tonnes). All six vessels operate with the latest modern technology.

About 95% of the company’s revenue is generated through exports into the European Union market, mainly to Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, France and Italy, along with Australia and South Africa.

Hangana Seafood supplies both the international retail chains and the food service sector with value-added skinless and skin-on IQF products.

By attending seafood shows, following trends and fostering relationships with its long-term partners, the company can constantly adjust supply to match international demand.

The recent Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of the Namibian resource has supported the company’s strategy in unlocking and exploring opportunities in new markets and growing its retail sector.

Hangana has implemented processes across its supply chain to ensure the safety, legality and quality of its food products.

The name Hangana means “Unite” in Oshiwambo (often referred to as come together).

Hangana Seafood currently has 1 501 permanent employees, considers its people the most important resource, and therefore strives to create positive experiences for its employees. The company aims to grow and foster trusting relationships with employees; be transparent; communicate regularly and openly; respect one another; and allow everyone to feel that they matter within the company.

Hangana strives to empower its employees to not only become more productive and add more value in the workplace, but also to become a more valued family and community members and citizens of the country at large.

Knowing that wellbeing is multifaceted, Hangana operates an on-site medical clinic, with two registered nurses and a wellness coordinator, who assist in promoting a healthy work/life balance and plan regular checkups with employees to ensure that all are aware of the importance of a healthy body and mind.

Guided by a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme through the O&L Group, Hangana supports initiatives that further the group’s purpose “Creating a Future, Enhancing Life”, in areas such as health, education and environmental preservation, amongst others.

In 2021, Hangana, on behalf of O&L and together with sister company Kraatz, created a colourful and joyful playground for approximately 120 children within the Topnaar community in the Erongo region.
