WINDHOEK — Windhoek Deputy Mayor Muesee Kazapua says the municipality has plans to electrify and bring other basic services to informal settlements in the capital in the 2014/2015 financial year, although not everything will be rolled out at once.

Kazapua said the municipality has mapped out plans for the different settlements following public meetings held with residents for them to air their concerns and needs.

Among the plans are the electrification of Havana Extension 1, 2 and 3 and construction of a fire station.

""We have started with the process. Tenders were advertised to install electricity points in Havana,"" he informed New Era this week, saying the fire station was a matter of urgency as residents are in constant danger of losing their shacks to fire.

He said the municipality was also planning to install more water points in the area so that people do not have to walk long distances to collect water, while road construction was also on the cards.

""We are in the process of designing the roads and some houses may have to be relocated to make way for proper infrastructure,"" he added.

The deputy mayor said the municipality was also addressing problems in all other informal settlements to get basic services to the people, but cautioned that it was a cash-flow challenge as they do not make a profit since auctioning of erven in the city was stopped.

""We won’t be able to manage everything at once. We must take little steps at a time,"" he said, adding that they were struggling with servicing erven and needed some form of subsidy to realize their plans.
