Nine houses in posh areas of Windhoek broken into this week
2016-07-21Staff Report 2 Windhoek Posh suburbs have once again become targets of daring armed robbers who got away with valuable goods. From Friday to yesterday the City Police recorded nine house break-ins while one house in Eros whose owners are in Germany had all its belongings stolen yesterday morning. According to City Police spokesperson Cillie Auala no arrests have been made so far because it is organized crime and by the time the police responded the criminals had already left. She also said the robbers had disconnected the alarm systems. Auala confirmed that crime used to be higher in Katutura and Khomasdal but crime has migrated to leafy areas and has gone up by 125% compared to previous periods in areas such as Suiderhof, Cimbebasia, Kleine Kuppe, Klein Windhoek, Academia and Eros. Auala stated the robbers monitor the house and place objects in front of the driveway and if the objects are not removed it is an indication that no one is at home. On Monday around midday, seven men armed with knives locked the owners of one house in one room and stole one laptop, two tablets, an unknown amount of money and jewellery. Another house in Klein Windhoek was broken into during the early hours of Tuesday when thieves stole one flat screen TV, cash of N$700, an iPhone 6 and a handbag. Two more houses were broken into on Wednesday – one in Eros where thieves used unknown objects to lift up the window and gain entry into the house and took every valuable item. “The owners are in Germany and they were called to verify items stolen and their value when they come to Namibia.” In a similar incident, a house in Khomasdal was broken into yesterday morning when thieves gained entry through the window, broke the burglar bars and took one laptop and jewellery. Robbers also targeted a house in Suiderhof this week where they disconnected the alarm, cut the roof, gained entry and stole two safes, cash of N$18 000 and three toolboxes. Auala further said although the areas have high security measures, when criminals go steal it’s either organized crime or they know owners are not around or depend on domestic workers for tip-offs. “It is important that if they (homeowners) are travelling for more than three days to inform the City Police so that when we patrol we make rounds to that house. It is not guaranteed that we offer 24 hours security,” she said. 2016-07-21Staff Report 2
