Industry Loop with NSK Are you still hustling for “GIGS”?
"If you are “hustling” for gigs, then something is wrong. Gigs should come naturally. If gigs are not coming in, there is need for entertainers to go back to the drawing board. On the board, the first point should be a list of all the events and its target audience. Thereafter, the key should be to highlight the events that fit your brand.Every event has an objective. These objectives are usually harboured by the head event organiser. Event organisers will choose their set of entertainers according to their objectives, and vision of the event they are organising. Entertainers seem never to understand this key part of the business of entertainment. Kwaito group Coastal Young Celebs can never expect the organisers of the Old Mutual Jazz Festival to call them up for a quote earmarked for a performance slot. It will be super weird to expect Webster to host “A new Season” on NBC. Big Ben can never wait on a call from Neptune Black poised for a performance slot at the Bank Windhoek Theatre School to “spit bars”. This rationale has fallen on deaf ears as one often sees entertainers running around begging event organisers to put them on the programme. Entertainers need to reassess their brands and target markets before approaching event organisers. The sooner entertainers develop a professional approach about their businesses; we will not have entertainer’s embarrassing themselves by stooping low to “hustle” for gigs.   However, if you are the entertainer that does not accept feedback then surely you are bound to be isolated from the business aspect of entertainment. Feedback makes you wiser, smarter and faster. Feedback is what sharpens your approach to business. Feedback is not your “homies”. Friends rarely paint a truthful picture. Feedback is radio presenters, industry analysts, music sympathisers and general critics. If you passed that stage with flying colours, then you know you have a relevant product. It does not stop there. Remember, we said:
  1. List all events,
  2. Fit your brand to these events.
The product that successfully made it past radio presenters; industry analysts, music sympathisers and general critics, that’s the product that you should subject to point #2. There are a few things that you need to equip yourself with as an entertainer:
  1. Rate Card
  2. Artist Profile
  3. Reference Book
  4. Compiled feedback (continuously updated)
  5. Statistics
Entertainment is a business unless you are in it just for the passion. Passion however is expensive. Until the next loop, we say “GMTM”.
