interior dÉcor and design: Sitting room tips

I am super excited to embark on this journey with you and share tips on interior décor and design. This week, we will be sharing sitting room tips. As an interior designer and decorator, it is important to have a good understanding of colour, material, furniture, interior design tools and a whole lot of technical and practical skills. Here are a few tips to follow:

1. Personality: The first thing you want to do is to understand the personality of those engaging in the space. This will make it easy and help you visualise the whole set up before they even tell you the interior paint colour.

2. Paint: You want to choose a paint that best compliments your personality. If you are doing it for a client, remember to leave it up to them because it is their space. There are, however, a few criteria to consider, e.g. children and pets. Make sure you choose a colour that is easy to clean and that which brings out the best in you.

3. Couch/sofa: If there is one thing that needs a huge investment in this room, it is sofas. Make sure you buy a quality couch that will stand the test of time. I prefer sofas from Nictus. They have quality couches and their prices are fair. There are many quality furniture stores all over Namibia and whatever your choice, I advise you to invest in a good one.

4. Lighting: It is not always that you need high light, so it is equally important that you invest in low light as well. Pupkewitz Megabuild, Mr Price Home and Sheet Street all have these to your disposal. I have also discovered quality lighting shops opposite the Ministry of Land and Transport in Ausspannplatz/Southern Industry.

5. Rug: You want to choose a mat that feels good under your feet – one that best compliments your personality and goes with your sitting room theme. It is best to invest in a quality one that will last you a whole while, and that which is easy to wash.

6. Additional furniture: Some homeowners love to display certain elements in their living area, e.g. awards and other accessories of sentimental value. These should be stored in an isolated glass cabinet and/or personalised cupboard. Having a bookshelf is also ideal for book collectors who do not have a special room for them.

7. Define the room with decor: This is probably my favourite thing to do. Always leave space for these. Minimal decor is ideal but this depends on individuals. I love potted plants; I feel they liven up space and defines it.

Also, remember your favourite wall art and portrait. While choosing our craft and other accessories, it should have some tidiness to it. Do not forget to incorporate traditional touch (for cultural lovers). A classic table that one should have tailor-made by local carpenters can also give your living area a definition.
Mr Price Home, Sheet Street, Pep Home and @Home are some of the many shops that sell beautiful decor accessories.
