Isaacs downplays title talks as Tigers go top
2015-10-19Staff Report 2 "Windhoek Tigers veteran mentor Brian Isaacs has refused to get carried away by his team’s perfect run in the MTC Namibia Premiership title race, despite going top of the table after yesterday’s comfortable 4-2 win over Black Africa. Currently the only unbeaten team after nine rounds of matches, Tigers had beaten Rehoboth side Flamingoes 1-0 earlier on Saturday, which invigorated their hopes and determination going into yesterday’s clash against Black Africa, who had also earlier on Friday beat rivals African Stars by 1-0. After Friday and Saturday’s matches, Black Africa and Tigers were equal on 20 points with BA sitting atop and Tigers in 2nd place, followed by African Stars in 3rd place on 16 points – meaning both Tigers and BA desperately needed a victory going into yesterday’s match in order to take charge of proceedings at the top of the log. But as fate would have it, Isaacs’ marauding charges proved to be the better team on the day as they marshalled on to brush aside the equally ambitious Woody Jacobs-led BA by a resounding 4-2 victory, which propelled them to the top of the table on 23 points. With the defeat, BA now remains in 2nd place with 20 points, followed by African Stars in 3rd place with 17 points after yesterday’s goalless draw against Flamingoes, while Orlando Pirates collected maximum points over the weekend to claim 4th place on 15 points. Despite taking charge of proceedings at the top of the log, Isaacs still strongly believes it is too early to gauge Tigers’ chances of a first title since Namibia’s Independence 25 years ago. “I’m very pleased with the results and our overall performance. I think defensively we are on point and that’s why we remain the only unbeaten side in the league so far. I think we’ve proven ourselves and people are beginning to notice our presence in the league title race, which is a great thing going forward,” a jovial Isaacs said. “Victories against African Stars and Black Africa speak volumes in terms of how serious we are and what we can do as a team, but we won’t get carried away by the results.
