Junius is Namibia’s flag bearer at Rio Olympics
Windhoek Namibia’s leading amateur boxer Jonas Junius has been chosen to be the country’s flag bearer for the Olympic Summer Games, slated to kick-start in the Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro, tomorrow. The honour was bestowed upon Junius by the president of the National Olympic Committee (NNOC), Abner ‘Big Daddy’ Xoagub, earlier this week. Junius, who leads the ten-member Namibian delegation to the multi-sports games in Brazil, burst onto the boxing scene in dramatic fashion when he won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after narrowly losing to Josh Taylor in 2014. Ever since, the 22-year-old lad from Swakopmund has been one of Namibia’s most successful athletes. He underlined his exceptional quality by securing 2nd spot at the All Africa Games in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) capital Brazzaville, last year. Despite his enormous success over the last couple of years, Junius has always had his eyes fixed on the grand prize at this year’s Olympics – and is determined to claim a medal irrespective of the colour. In an effort to realize his dream he’s been in training over the past four months, adding training sessions in the swimming pool for his boxing routine, as he aims to be in the best shape possible.
