Kunene, Omatando get N$1b sub-stations

OTJEKUA - Residents of the Omusati and Oshana regions received their newest 400Kv sub-stations on Friday.

At the official inauguration of the Kunene sub-stations, the managing director of Nampower Kahenge Haulofu said these were constructed as part of Nampower’s ambition to strengthen northern Namibia’s transmission backbone.

The sub-stations are said to be providing the first phase of a future redundant evacuation path for the Ruacana power station.

The stations are also providing an integration point for future transmission interconnection between the Namibian and Angolan grids.

“Knowing the gravity of the responsibility that Nampower is charged with, the provision of reliable, secure electricity is a duty that we are committed to fulfil,” said Haulofu.

“We are also in the process of installing these at the Auas, Kokerboom, Gerus and Obib sub-stations across the country,” he noted.

The shunt reactors are used in sub-stations to limit over-voltage overhead transmission lines.

Haulofu said Nampower also invested about N$3.2 million in school fences construction in the Kunene region.

Mines and energy minister Tom Alweendo was also present and said the sub-stations provide a future with secured energy.

“The transmission lines are serving both rural and urban areas, and they are also upgrading the level of development in most of the areas,” he observed.
