Learners geared to go back to school

As the resumption of face-to-face teaching for schools in the country is approaching, measures like handwashing, physical distancing, mask-wearing, and temperature checks are being integrated into school life.
Here is a glimpse of what a return to school looks like for learners in the country.

“I am actually physically mentally and emotionally prepared for the pressure going to be put on us this year because we have a lot to cover before the end of this year and I am looking forward to seeing the new kids and seeing some changes within the learners, teachers and school premises,” said Tulela Nelumbu, a grade 11 learner at Onawa Secondary School.

Shikongo Aurelia, a learner at Nuuyoma Secondary School was also thrilled to go back to school.
“I am looking forward to the last week of high school, get positive results, achieve my goals and go to university,” she said candidly.
“I have had enough time to rest and I am ready to take on the new school year. I would have said I am looking forward to the sport activities and festivals we have this year, but with everything going on it’s highly unlikely. I would say for now I’m looking forward to seeing my friends again, and learning new things,” said Tangeni Nasheya a learner at Windhoek Technical High School.

While there is a mood of celebration and relief among many learners, some learners are sceptical to start school amidst the pandemic.
Shivute Aina from Nangombe Combined School said the pandemic has instilled fear into her.

“Due to the rise of Covid-19 cases, I am not sure if I am ready for school but I do not have much of a choice,” she said.
Learners missed months of education during 2020 when schools were either closed or partially opened as a result of the various Covid-19 levels of lockdown.
Classes are expected to resume next week Tuesday as announced by the education ministry earlier this month.
