Letter - 59 years of Africa Day

Kletus Likuwa

Since 25 May 1963, Africans have celebrated Africa Day, which is the formation of the Organisation of African Unity now known as the African Union. This day represents a continental commitment to undo the negative images of Africa as a continent betrayed, in chaos, in self-destruction, in crisis, a place of suffering, wars, oppression, hunger, diseases, backwardness etc.

The day 25 May signifies Africans’ new appointment with history, a day of renewed concerted efforts by African leaders to move the African continent forward from its negative state of crisis to one of renewal; to spur growth and reduce poverty and overcome Africa’s marginalisation in the world economy and international affairs.

Since then, African leaders have initiated and committed to developmental plans such as for example, the Agenda 2063 of the Africa we want which speaks, amongst others, to an Africa of good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law. As Africans celebrate Africa Day, every year on 25 May, they should remain cognizant of the achievements and setbacks of yester years and allow these experiences inspire Africans to work collectively to realise their continental vision of a self-reliant continent that uses its resources sparingly for the inclusive benefit of all Africans.
